বাংলা গানের সুদীর্ঘ পরম্পরায় 'আধুনিক' গানের এক বিশেষ স্থান। রবীন্দ্রনাথ ও চার গীতিকবি পরবর্তী সমসময়ের বাংলা গানকে 'আধুনিক' হিসেবে অভিহিত করা হয়। বিংশ শতকের তিনের দশক থেকে আধুনিক গানের পথ-চলা শুরু। সূচনা, তারপর তার বিকাশের বিভিন্ন ও বিচিত্র ধারা, গতিপ্রকৃতি, ধরনধারণ, সময়ের স্রোতে বদলে যাওয়া-এইসব নিয়েই বর্তমান গ্রন্থ। এই আলোচনায় স্বভাবতই এসেছে নানা গীতিকার, সুরকার, শিল্পীর প্রসঙ্গ, যাঁরা আধুনিক গানকে বিভিন্ন সময়ে সমৃদ্ধ করেছেন। বিংশ শতকের তিনের দশক থেকে একবিংশ শতাব্দীর শুরু-এই সময়সীমায় সৃষ্ট আধুনিক গানের পথ-চলার এক চলচ্ছবি-প্রসঙ্গ: বাংলা আধুনিক গান।

In the long tradition of Bengali music, 'adhunik gaan” (modern song) ' has a special place. Contemporary Bengali music after Rabindranath and four other lyrical poets is termed as 'modern'. The path of modern music started from the third decade of the 20th century. The present book, written by Sri Swapan Shome, deals with the beginning and various stages of this development with a special reference to the changing  nature and style over a period of time. In this context, names of various lyricists, composers, artistes, who have enriched the Bengali modern music at different times, have naturally come up. In short, the book is a snapshot of the journey and progression of the Bengali modern music during the period ie third decade of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century .
