Pattachitra has been closely associated with the everyday life of the Indian subcontinent. For decades, this distinctive art form has carried the heritage of Bengal and its people. The Pattachitra tradition of Bengal has its own unique visual language. The word ‘patta’ means ‘cloth’ and is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘patta’. The artists who create Pattachitra are known as Patuas. Although Pattachitra is practised in several parts of Bengal, two places have developed distinctive styles of the art—Naya village in Pingla, West Midnapore, and Kalighat in Kolkata. Naya is known for different forms of Pattachitra, including the Jorano Pat or Dighal Pat, Chowko Pat and Yam Pat. Kalighat paintings, on the other hand, primarily depict scenes from nineteenth-century Kolkata life. Pattachitra has traditionally portrayed rural Bengali society, episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, the Manasamangal, and various mythological stories. Over time, social and political issues, along with contemporary events, also found their place in this art form.
The key features of The Bengal Store’s Pattachitra collection are:
These Pattachitra paintings are created by legendary artists from West Midnapore district. The paintings are approximately 45–50 years old, dating back to the early 1970s. Instead of synthetic acrylic colours, the artists used colours made from plants and naturally occurring minerals. The colour palette and arrangement show the influence of the early Bengal School of Art. Each Pattachitra exists as a single, unique piece, making it a valuable addition for art collectors.
