The Queen doll or ‘Rani Putul’ of Howrah is a beautiful reflection of one of the most popular handicrafts of Bengal. It has a very simple and rustic folklore appeal. Looking at them, it seems that a majestic woman has been transformed into a doll. Made by using two-faced wooden dice, the dolls are moulded from mud and then put in kilns for drying. Sometimes these unique dolls, which are made only up to waist high, are also coloured with red paint or mica to give it a rich glowing colour. The royal attire of the dolls, sometimes with a crown on its head makes them look like real-life gorgeous queens. Some collectors are of the opinion that this art has been derived predominantly from a reflection of The Queen Victoria of England, although some other shapes also exist. A dying art, a consequence of reckless development of modern time, is not all lost, however, due to the passionate effort of a few artisan families, of whom Dibakar Pal of Howrah district is one of the most prominent artisans. He still continues the legacy of his forefathers diligently. These dolls are sold in various rural fairs in Howrah, Hooghly and a few more surrounding districts where they are quite popular.
আগে পুতুল বানানো হত এক-খোল ছাঁচে। পরবর্তীকালে অল্প সময়ের মধ্যে বেশি পুতুল বানানোর জন্য দু-খোল ছাঁচের ব্যবহার হতে থাকে। হাওড়া জেলার বিভিন্ন অঞ্চলে বানানো হয় দু-খোল ছাঁচের রানি পুতুল। হুগলি জেলার শ্যাওড়াফুলির কুমোররাও এই পুতুল তৈরি করেন। রানি পুতুলের পা থাকে না। মাথায় থাকে কোঁকরানো চুল। কোনো কোনো পুতুলে মুকুটও পরানো হয়। অনেক সময়ে অভ্র মেশানো লাল বা গোলাপি রং লাগানো হয় পুতুলের গায়ে। কেউ কেউ মনে করেন, রানি পুতুল তৈরি হয় ব্রিটেনের রানি ভিক্টোরিয়ার আদলে। কিছু রানি পুতুলের চুল বাঁধার কায়দা অথবা পোশাকে ভিক্টোরিয়ার প্রভাব রয়েছে। তবে অন্য ধরনের রানি পুতুলও দেখা যায়।
