Bishnupur, a small town in the Bankura district of West Bengal is globally famous for its majestic terracotta temples and rich heritage. Apart from terracotta artwork, this town attracts a lot of attention for its magnificent soft clay dolls or ‘Heem Putul’ which are handcrafted by a group of women belonging to the artist families of Faujdars. These dolls are created following the traditional techniques of doll-making that have been passed on for generations, now.
‘Hingul’, a vivid red mineral comprising of mercury sulphide is used in colouring these dolls to give them a more vibrant and unique look. After carving the clay into various types of figurines, these Hingul Dolls are dried underneath the sun and then dyed with a wide range of herbal and nature-friendly colours to make them look more appealing. The most intriguing factor about these dolls is the western influence in terms of their attire. You will often notice these finger-sized dolls donning frocks, caps, and other western outfits. Not only are these Heem dolls used by priests for religious rituals and ceremonies but also by young children as play toys.

বাঁকুড়া জেলার বিষ্ণুপুরে দশাবতার তাস এবং দুর্গাপটের শিল্পী শীতল ফৌজদারের পরিবারের মেয়েরা হিঙ্গুল পুতুল তৈরি করেন। হিঙ্গুল এক বিশেষ ধরনের খনিজ পদার্থ, যার রং হয় লাল। হাতে টিপে এই পুতুলগুলি বানানোর পর তাতে একসময় হিঙ্গুল রং করা হত। তার থেকেই পুতুলের এমন নামকরণ। তবে এখন পুতুলগুলোকে সাজাতে শুকনো গুঁড়ো রং লাগানো হয়। কাঁচামাটি দিয়ে তৈরি এক আঙুল লম্বা পুতুলগুলি সহজেই জয় করে নেয় মানুষের মন। বাংলার পুতুল হলেও এগুলির সাজসজ্জায় বিদেশি প্রভাব রয়েছে। এদের গায়ে ফ্রক পরানো থাকে, কোনো কোনো পুতুলের মাথায় টুপিও দেখা যায়। সন্তানসহ হিঙ্গুল পুতুল কাজে লাগে ষষ্ঠীপুজো এবং জিতাষ্ঠমীতে। বাকি সব হিঙ্গুল পুতুল শিশুদের খেলনা হিসেবে জনপ্রিয়।
